In detail

Tourist SIM available

Yes. Physical, prepaid tourist SIM cards are sold widely by AIS, True and dtac (True Corp). Dedicated counters sit right outside customs at major airports like Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Phuket (HKT), where staff will physically insert and activate the SIM for you. To skip airport lines or pricing, the same SIMs are also sold at any 7-Eleven or official carrier store in malls across the country.

SIM registration required

Yes. Under NBTC (National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission) regulations, Thailand requires a physical passport for identity verification to purchase and activate any local SIM. The agent scans the passport and takes a face photo for biometric capture at the point of sale; a photocopy or digital photo is generally not accepted. Foreigners are capped at three registered mobile numbers per operator, and tourist SIMs are valid up to 60 days before needing re-verification at an official shop.

Airport SIM counter

All four major international airports have dedicated telecom counters staffed by AIS, TrueMove H and dtac (the last two both run by True Corp since their merger), positioned right after you clear customs. At Suvarnabhumi (BKK), counters cluster around Gates 6, 7 and 9 in the Level 2 International Arrivals Hall. At Don Mueang (DMK), they sit side-by-side on the 1st floor of the Terminal 1 arrivals hall near Exits 2, 3 and 5. At Phuket (HKT), the main counters are in the Terminal 2 International Arrivals Hall near Exits 1 and 2, with a smaller TrueMove H kiosk in Domestic Arrivals. At Chiang Mai (CNX), TrueMove H sits near Exit 2, dtac is on the 2nd floor of the international arrivals hall, and AIS has counters in the arrival/departure zones.

Airport counter hours

The flagship True Corp (TrueMove H/dtac) counters at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang run strictly 24/7, so even a 3 AM arrival finds them staffed; AIS keeps 24-hour operations at its primary arrivals-hall counters too, though some smaller satellite kiosks inside baggage claim can close during the quietest overnight windows. Phuket's main AIS/True/dtac counters are also officially open 24 hours. Chiang Mai is more fluid, tracking the last scheduled international flight of the night rather than a fixed round-the-clock schedule. If a specific counter is closed, any airport 7-Eleven (strictly 24/7) sells physical tourist SIMs, passport in hand.
